Flimsies, Pieced Backing and Frankenbatting

I'm happy to say I have two RSC (Rainbow Scrap Challenge) flimsies!

Keep the Home Fires Burning
I had sew much fun adding all these blocks together!

...and Sherri McConnell A Quilting Life BOM 2024

Finding the 'right' fabric for the border and sashing for a scrappy quilt can sometimes be a challenge. Since it has 'all' colors, any of these colors could be used, I guess. My DH suggested black for the sashing. Hm.... What do I have in my stash? Definitely not a big choice. A few strips left of Moda Marbles, one yard black Grunge is hiding somewhere... I ended up with a fabric I've had 'forever'; white pindots on black, that was just enough, only a few strips left! For the border I've chosen a gorgeous batik in dark blue, purple and turquoise.

The last days I've worked on pieced backings for both flimsies.
I've pulled out fabrics from my stash, some been there 'forever'. You know those fabrics that are pulled in and out of the shelf until you get damn tired of them, leave them and forget about them. That's the case for these pieced backings.

'Keep the Home Fires Burning' is square, approximately 73"x73" (185 cm square). I have to get the quilt (all three layers) on the table to see if the backing fits. The sides are only an inch bigger than the quilt! YIKES! (Don't ask me where the math went! ...or my brain?!!) I may not get it straight on the table, I may have to get it on the floor getting it straight. I shall see... My poor old knees won't be happy!
Fabric requirements for this quilt is approximately 8-1/2 yards for the top and 5 yards for the backing (total 13-1/2 yards)

It was easier to do the pieced backing for the BOM. I found some half yards and FQ's hidden at the bottom on a shelf, under a lot of Christmas fabrics!!! I know why they were 'hidden' there; I had no clue what to do with them and not sure I liked them that much either. A few were a challenge win years back.
Fabric requirements: Approximately 11 yards for the top and 4-1/2 yards backing (total 15-1/2 yards)
For these two quilts: All fabrics from my stash, a total of 29 yards. This is according to the fabric requirements.
Even if not visible (as I can see!), it sure has made a dent in my stash.

Some time ago I learnt a new word; frankenbatting
If that is new to you, you can learn more here
I have done frankenbatting for years without knowing it's a word for it. lol
Do you do frankenbatting?

A couple of days ago I had to go into the city again. On my way home I stopped at Bagatelle Mall to get a few groceries and have a look at the Christmas decor. I'm not a big fan of malls, I find them rather boring. Malls have popped up everywhere on the island the last years.

One of the entrances

...and even a decorated Banyan tree

I enjoyed admiring their Christmas display

Have you decorated the tree? That's what I'm going to do this weekend!

You should be proud of those two quilts - and even better that you used up stash, some of it stuff you didn't really like. I don't know which one I like better. As for our tree - it's been up for three weeks (the joy of having to use an artificial tree). Love it at night with the pretty white lights.

Both of those scrappy quilts are wonderful and so cheerful in all the colors. The pieced backing look quite successful, especially in using up those fabrics you were tired of seeing on the shelf. Great idea!!

Dear Astrid, I just love the settings you chose for your quilts, the backings are great and a brilliant use of those fabrics which take up space that we just cannot be inspired to use. Mall shopping, not my cup of tea either. Prefer small unique shops that are local. Thank you for sharing your beautiful rainbow scrap art quilts.

Your RSC quilt tops are beautiful! And pieced backings for both - way to go! I do sew up some frankenbatting every now and then - helps you use up those leftover pieces. Have fun decorating your tree!

[Hi Astrid--you are back in my feed- yay!!!]
I do franken batting for sure!! And franken fabrics too sometimes hahaha!!
I love pieced backings and sometimes the back comes out looking better than the front;))). Nothing like a reversible quilt I think --the ones I've made for my grands were all that way...a "two-fer".
Hugs, Julierose

You turned those RSC blocks into 2 wonderful quilts! I love them both. The border of the first one is FAB-u-LoUs!! Your DH was right; the black sashing on the second quilt, is perfect. Love the different colour cornerstones too. You worked hard for those backing and they turned out lovely enough to be the front. You are inspiring me to hunt down those "why-did-I-bought-that" FQ and sew them up into backing. I've been frankenbatting for a long time as I know Frankie Batt from way back when, lol. Enjoy! ;^)

I really love the asymmetry you created with Keep the Home Fires Burning. What a wonderful way to use the cornucopia of blocks you have made during 2024. You already know how much I admire the BOMs, so seeing the flimsy was extra special. Yes, I have been Franken piecing my batting for decades. I also started Franken piecing "yardage" from scraps. Great way to shrink down the pile of scraps and avoid filling landfills.

Great job on getting not one but two(!) tops finished! They both look wonderful. I printed the patterns for the stars as they came out with the intention of making them. Maybe for 2025. I'm usually behind on things so no big deal for me to be a year late! Lol! I have heard of frankenbatting and, yes, I do that too. It's amazing how far batting can go once you learn to do that.

Yes I use franken batting and should do a whole lot more since I have gobs of batting scraps. I love your pieced backings or should I say two sided quilts;) I have that 'old' fabric all over my shelves and yes they get shoved to the back or bottom of favorites! Happy Holidays.

Congratulations on your TWO flimsies. Using Sherri McConnell's BOM is a great idea for the RSC. I'm thinking about joining both next year. I've never done frankenbatting but I know of a few people who have, with great success. Our Christmas decorations are all in place, most gifts are wrapped and this week is all about the baking!

Great to see the RSC flimsies. I always wonder what the blocks will turn into.
I think pieced backings and batting are a great idea. No-one wants to waste either.
I love seeing outside trees decorated. It is a fun idea.
