Remember '70s has moved from my UFOs/WIPs list (UFO #14) to FINISH!
I got the idea to make a quilt in orange & brown in May 2023. That year/month, orange was the RSC color as well. Who does not remember the 1970's when orange and brown were popular? I think I had enough of these colors at that time! Orange is not amongst my favorite color, but if I had to choose between orange and pink, I know I would have a big problem! LOL
I have to say I like how this quilt turned out, mixed with Moda Marbles Steel and Slate blues. Such a pity Moda doesn't do these two colors anymore.
The idea was to make it entirely in orange and brown, but I ran out of Moda Marbles Chocolate Brown. I didn't have any other brown to match and I didn't want to purchase more fabric (and pay a fortune in shipping!). I had to come up with another solution and ended up with the Steel and Slate blues, which was just enough!
Sashing, or no sashing, I thought?
I decided on sashing. The only fabric I had enough of, was one in orange/yellow, also used for a few blocks. It was not enough for the outer border. I found a very dark brown in my stash, which was just enough too! The binding has some tiny lighter brown flowers.
I love pieced backings, but for this quilt I fell in love with this 108" wide backing from Rubin Design Studio (eQuilter) and had to purchase it! It fits perfect in the colors.
How to quilt a quilt, is always my question.
For this one I went for custom quilting each block. It takes more time to quilt, but I love the look when it's done.

An easy block to make
Testing Serpentine stitches
My goal is to finish this one by end of May.
It has been nice and sunny all week
Don't even see the mountain in the distance.
We took advantage of the nice weather and did quite some yard work
These are pink guavas. On the photo they are still a bit 'green' (not 100% ripe). We have to pick them before the birds and fruit bats eat them!

The slate blue was a good choice to mix in with the orange and brown. Beautiful finish!!
I remember orange and brown combo. Sometimes blue would be tossed in as well if it was clothing. It is a good looking quilt. The sun is out here today
I would never have thought of adding blue to your yellow orange and brown blocks, but it has worked beautifully. I've never tried that fruit before.
I'm glad you added the slate blue and marble steel. It's like opening a window and bring the light in. The 70's were dark years with dark wood paneling in every living rooms and orange or avocado green shaggy carpet. Nope! Not going back there, lol. But this quilt is airy and awesome. Great job on the quilting too. Enjoy the fruits. ;^)
Remember 70's looks wonderful . Oh yes, I remember those colors along with the avocado green and harvest gold. LOL. The quilt is beautiful and the name made me smile.
Another beautiful finish! I remember those colors from the 70s. Reminds me of The Brady Bunch with their bright orange kitchen counters!!
Your quilt is so pretty! I never thought I'd be liking 'earth' tones again. Happy stitching!
I love your addition of steel and slate blues for an updated modern look!
I'm honored that I could inspire you, Astrid. Your three toppers are cute and so well coordinated--love the color combos. It is a simple and gratifying way to use those 5" scrap squares.
Thank you, Chantal! I'm glad I added the two blues, it makes the quilt looking brighter. Not sure I had liked it that much in brown and orange only.
Congratulations on finishing Remembering 70s. All of your scraps work so well together in this quilt and it sounds like you made a good dent in your stash. Well done, Astrid!
Beautiful finish, Astrid. And the pink guava looks delicious.
Thank you, Linda! We have the pink guava, white guava as well as a variety with much smaller berries. (There are so many varieties). I prefer the pink ones to the white guavas.
The stars look great. This is a lovely cheerful quilt top. Great to see it done.
I'm with you in orange and pink not being favourite colours, although I do like fushia. Well done on another finish and I do like the combination of colours. As for guava, I don't think I've ever tried it. They don't often appear in stores here and the climate doesn't lend itself to growing them.
Ohhh I LOVE the colors you used for this one - I am kind glad you ran out of the brown - that blue adds such a pop to the whole thing. sashing is PERFECT - what a great finish!!!
Kos deg.
The backing is a perfect choice! Thanks for sharing in Sew & Tell.
