As the title says; Secret Sewing Lap Quilt is well received!
Earlier this year, when I was going through a huge box with non-quilting quality fabrics (and all sort of other things) saved. For what?! In that box, I found
flannel - can be used
jeans - some can be used
other materials - some can be used for grocery bags
the rest - tossed / donation
Some years ago, I got jeans and flannel shirts from my DF in Norway. The idea was to make a quilt out of the 'old' flannel shirts and rugs from the denim. Did that happen? No!
Going through and sorting out that box, I came up with the idea to make a lap quilt using the flannel shirts and jeans.
I chose a simple log cabin block and alternated between flannel and denim as other border on the blocks. Each block is 12" finished.
I didn't have any suitable flannel for the binding. I purchased just enough Dark Green Woolies flannel, because green is his favorite color!
Measures: 61 inches / 155 cm square
Denim is thick, hence some of the seams I had to press open.
This quilt was the first one I've made from flannel shirts and jeans. I've kept what was left, until further notice! LOL
Confession: Even if I had fun making the quilt, I did not like working with denim! I don't like the thickness. I have a rag quilt in mind for the pieces I have left, but that won't happen until next year - IF EVER!
My DF loves the quilt. Some of the flannel pieces are from shirts he was wearing at work (he's retired now). The center square/block even has his name. I cut that from the side pocket of the shirt. The flannel duvet cover (backing) belonged to one of his acquaintances. Not exactly his choice of color, but it worked out as backing!

ooooh - I love it!!! I love anything denim. I'm sure your friend was absolutely delighted with it and will enjoy many cozy naps beneath its warmth.
Just lovely work on this, Astrid!! Denim is really had to work with--just so heavy weight...Nice mix of fabrics in this one...hugs, Julierose
Bravo! It's lovely. I did a rag quilt with jeans once. Only once. Lol. I still have lots of jeans that I've kept, so far. I like what you did and I took note for a future project if ever I decide to use the jeans I have. Jeans is not an easy fabric to work with, I agree, but you did a great job! Enjoy! ;^)
This is a great finish. The combination of flannel and denim looks great together.. I can understand that sewing the denim is not easy, so well done getting it done.
This quilt came out great! It looks very cozy and so warm. All the fabrics look great together!
Wow! You did a great job with those fabrics and excellent way to recycle some well-loved pieces. I'm sure your friend won't mind the duvet on the back once he is snuggle underneath.
so nice your long time friend from Norway sends you fabric! I like flannel but I don't work with denim it is just too hard to go through
Thank you, Chantal! I have some pieces of jeans left, I may turn them into a small rag quilt, or make a small floor mat. That won't happen any time soon! lol
Aaw what a sweet quilt and it is so wonderful that it has so many memories for your DF stitched into it. I bet this quilt is very warm and cozy too. Beautiful job, Astrid.
I absolutely love ❤️ this quilt, Astrid. You did an amazing 👏 job.
Thank you, Linda! It was a fun quilt to make, but I can't say I liked working with denim since it's thicker than quilting cotton.
