Basket Quilt UFO - WIP

It took me some days deciding on how to do the basket blocks, since I was not that eager to do the original block design. Then I saw Melva's beautiful Basket block and knew right away my blocks need a 'flower pot'!

I think the left one looks much better and I decided on that design.
I also get to use up my basket weave fabrics that have been sitting on the shelf for some years! What I don't use for the blocks, will be used for a pieced backing. I made 5 of the design to the right, those blocks will be used for the backing too.

The pattern calls for 16 Basket blocks and I'm happy to say they are all done!

I went through ALL my stash looking for suitable background fabric for the blocks. The one I intended is not enough! Of course! It's a beautiful Crab Apple Hill Studio called 'Tea Rose'. IMO; it would have been perfect. I need about 2 yards, I have only 1 yard. I have a few in neutrals cream, but I didn't like any of them, they look a bit dull. So, I went hunting online and did order one with tiny flowers in muted colors that should fit.

I love making this quilt (so far! lol), but there's something with the block I don't like, but I can't pinpoint or explain exactly what it is. Hm.... they look like the Gremlins?! LOL
What do you think?

Next step is to make 72 4-patch units for the second border, using 1.5" squares! That means I need 288 1.5" squares! Good thing I have quite some cut already, for this ongoing project I haven't worked on for a very long time. I forgot to add this one when I did my UFO/WIP list for this year.

I haven't done anything red this week.
I have A Quilting Life's BOM for March to do. It includes red. It should be done by next week.

Update on the delayed quilting thread order: The company has re-shipped my order, hopefully with the right custom papers this time.
...and I'm still waiting for other quilting thread too. SIGH! I have 5-6 quilts thread basted and ready to be quilted. Oh well, I have more than enough other WIPs to work on, while waiting...

Hope your parcel arrives without stress this time. It's annoying when we have to rely on mail order for our supplies. Right now I'm struggling with the quilt shop where I bought my sewing machine trying to get them to ship me a new throat plate. After a long wait they finally said they have one in stock and ready to ship to me after they receive my credit card info - which I sent right away. It's been weeks and still no response from them. Emailed them again earlier this week and actually received a semi-prompt reply telling me they'd look into it 'tomorrow and get back to me'. Wonder when that 'tomorrow' will actually be?

Ooh! Great decision on the design change. I like them with the "flower pot" base. I didn't see gremlins before you mentioned it. ha Once you see something it's hard to unsee it. Funny story. I bought new towels a few years ago in a blue/white pattern. One day I noticed a creepy little face in the pattern and I can't stand them now! I moved them to the guest bathroom so I don't have to look at that creepy face everyday. {giggle}

I do like your basket blocks with baskets, too, Astrid! The original design does look a bit like a gremlin - once you said it, I could see it. Hope you can find just the right background fabric and plenty of it!

It must be frustrating waiting for your parcels to arrive. I think you mentioned earlier that you have to buy all your quilting supplies online? No quilt shop where you live?

The original basket design is unusual. With the way the two fabrics alternate, it doesn’t bring to mind a flower basket much. Your addition of the pot on bottom defined it more and makes the “gremlin” outline shape go away. I think your idea for ordering sashing was a good choice to brighten the whole quilt up rather than the cream, which sounds like it would be more quiet/dull. We will see when the fabric comes!

Nice change! Now they look like flower baskets instead of gremlins! Congrats on moving the UFO forward!

Good luck with the basket blocks. Lots of decisions to make. Hope it all works out.

I agree that using the basket weave fabric for the pot is a great decision. I like the blocks and didn't see "gremlin" until you mentioned it. All together, they will make a nice quilt.

I just love your basket blocks. I didn't see the gremlin until you said so! Now, I can't unsee it! You're doing great getting these UFO's all done.
